The foundation of Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, is based on the idea that we are all made up of a unique balance of the three constitutions or doshas, and that each dosha is made up of one or more of the 5 elements. Vata is made of air and ether, Pitta is made of fire, and Kapha is made of water and earth. Each of these doshas governs different systems of the body: Pitta is responsible for our digestive system and for brainstorming. Kapha keeps us grounded and steadfast. Vata allows us freedom with creativity and capacity to embrace change. When our unique combination of all three doshas is in balance, we operate optimally in our world. When one dosha is imbalanced or aggravated, the other two work in overdrive, which then creates even more imbalance. Understanding ourselves is also part of our eternal quest to understand our life’s purpose, our dharma. Therefore the goal of Ayurveda is to align with the practices of yoga to help us all more easily enjoy and participate in life! Learn more about Maharishi Ayurveda HERE.
