Essential Oils Tip: Grounding

When you are working on grounding poses in yoga, you are reaching deep into your roots (your lower body, legs and feet) and connecting to the earth. The earth gently supports you as you find your strength and anchors you as you reach high… often higher than you could reach before. Connecting to the earth also allows you to learn the skill of staying in the present moment, of living your life to the fullest.

Whenever you are doing grounding work, choose to support your practice with a “base note” essential oil. These are typically oils that come from trees or grasses, and have an inherent strength, or fortitude in their aroma and constituents. They can be used both aromatically (palm of the hands and inhale, and/or in a diffuser) and topically (a drop on the bottoms of the feet and rub in, a drop over the heart/back of neck).

Some of our favorite tree oils for grounding include: grounding blend (may include such oils as spruce, Ho wood, frankincense, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, carrier oil), arborvitae, vetiver, sandalwood, frankincense, spruce, white fir, douglas fir, cedarwood, cypress, and patchouli.

Diffuser recipe for uplifting and grounding:

  • 2 drops wild orange
  • 1 drop lemon
  • 2 drops peppermint
  • 2 drops cinnamon
  • 1 drop rosemary

Remember you can increase or decrease the recipe in proportion to a comfortable strength for your room size. If it’s difficult to break the recipe down to a smaller size, you can blend the oils ahead of time (always in the order given) in a separate bottle and diffuse the appropriate amount of the new diffuser blend.
